IM Deltoid Trigger

OMFG...just did my first HCG trigger IM in my arm. I have never injected myself IM.

I nearly bit through my lip doing it.

OMG. OMG. OMG.

I am going to have to do some progesterone shots before my man gets home. I don't know how on earth I am going to do it myself.

IVF keeps pushing me beyond my limits.

OMG I can not believe you had to trigger in your ARM!! Is that the normal place? As I am a DE girl I have never had that particular pleasure, and I'm so sorry you had to do it yourself. SO nice to just let the guy do ONE THING.

Have you done PIOs yourself before? I've done several, and it was fine. I just ice the bejeezus out of my #$$ and make sure the oil is warm (not hot) going in, then my lovely heating pad for a bit. The twisting part is hard but I pretend it's a hunk o roast and stab it right in. Still shocks me that I can't feel anything.

Some people use heat before but since I've done this for sooooo many shots I'm scared to change my routine. Do you have a ritual?

Best of luck - when is the man returning?

No, the arms isn't a normal spot for me. My California doctors all had me trigger in my tummy, which is piece of cake.

But there is a study that if you trigger into muscle (IM shot) that the bioavailability of the HCG is higher for your body. So...I toyed with the idea of ignoring them and shooting into my stomach, but the data converted me.

I've never done a PIO shot myself. I have such horrid memories of shots in my bum as a child that they make me quite tense when someone else is doing it.

One thing they told me to do is to wedge the part I'm shooting into to the corner of a door jamb. I tried that with my arm and it worked. I didn't hit bone, blood, or nerve so it's all good!

I use progesterone in ethyl oleate, so it's thin and slippery and I use a much smaller needle than you use with a food based PIO. I lay on my stomach and try to relax while my man does the shot. Just draw it up and in it goes! ;-)

He's home late Friday night. My retrieval is tomorrow (Wed) so I'll probably start progesterone that night or the next...which means, I get to do a few of these shots myself. :-S

Good lord, the arm? That does not sound like fun. I'm glad you survived.

Well, I'd rather give myself a PIO shot in the butt than a trigger shot in the arm any day. I've done several myself when Dan wasn't around to help, and it can be done.

I found it easiest to do them lying down on the bed. I'd prop my upper body up with some pillows, so twisting around to reach would be easier.

Since you only have to do it for a night or two by yourself, just make sure you're doing it on the side that makes it easiest for you to use your dominant hand. So for me, I'd lay down on my left side, so my right side was available to shoot up using my right hand. (It gets trickier when you try to use your non dominant hand or try to twist even more to reach the other side.)

Good luck! You can totally do it.

Do a 3 day transfer if you only have a few to transfer. My first cycle I got preggo (early m/c though), and I did a 3 day transfer without ICSI. 2nd cycle, I used ICSI and had 3 wonderful blasts to transfer on day 5. BFN. I don't really think it matters though. Thanks for your comment on my blog (ttcnslc).... we're going to do a 3rd cycle even though my husband is showing ZERO excitement about it. The cycle will start in March. Gulp. Good luck to you, my friend!!!!
